La llamada de un extraño (A Stranger Calls), by Rafael Alcalde, is the winner of the 2012 LH Confidencial Award. The Jury underscored the increasing rythm of the text and the fact that in this novel the author pays special attention to the lack of intimacy in a society in which new technologies play a double role as enhancers of communication but also as a tool to control our movements.

Lots Happened to Me After I Died, by Ricardo Adolfo, was selected as the first and leading title in Portuguese language to be published by Alfaguara Portugal, the Portuguese branch of Santillana Group (Spain), launched in September 2009.

A young couple and their son, recently arrived illegal immigrants in a big city, are left stranded halfway home when their tube train breaks down. It soon becomes clear they don’t know any alternative route home – and nor can they ask for help as they don’t speak a word of the local language.

Confused, they walk through streets carrying their son inside a newly bought suitcase that doubles as a pram. By turns they are chased by two frightened women in hijab, abandoned by a runaway bus driver, robbed by a gang of street kids, and finally end up stealing a spare sleeping bag from a homeless man. The family’s traditional Sunday outing around the shopping streets – streets littered with bankruptcies and boarded-up façades – becomes a 24-hour marathon of revelations and confrontations that could make the couple inseparable, or could tear them apart.

Narrated by the husband, a loner locked inside his own mind, who believes that to make a good decision he has to do just the opposite of what he thinks is right, the novel explores the internal fight of someone forced into seclusion because he is unable to communicate with the world around him. La generación Zeta de la nueva novela negra mexicana

Una nueva generación de escritores irrumpe con fuerza con irónicas ficciones sociales influenciadas por el cine y el cómic

Seis matones asaltan un laboratorio, dejan 12 muertos y se llevan dos toneladas de seudoefedrina; un detective es contratado para proteger a Johnny Weissmuller en el festival de cine de Los Ángeles; un exconvicto, Elvis Infante, tiene el don de capturar demonios y hay quien le paga por sus servicios... Así arrancan algunas de las novelas de una nueva generación de jóvenes escritores mexicanos decididos a romper con los padres de la literatura de su país. Se sienten mucho más cerca del terror de Stephen King, el humor de los hermanos Cohen y la tenebrosidad de Frank Miller que de Juan Rulfo, Octavio Paz o Carlos Fuentes.

Es una generación aún sin nombre, tal vez generación Z, pese a la maldición que pesa sobre esta letra por el cartel narcotraficante, o generación Riteline por el medicamento que se les da a los niños hiperactivos, pero forman un grupo de escritores en torno a los 40 años con las ideas muy claras.

Bernardo Fernández Bef (Ciudad de México, 1972), flamante ganador del Premio Grijalbo de Novela con Hielo negro, define algunas de sus características comunes: "Compartimos un gusto por los subgéneros, la novela policiaca, la de terror, el thriller, la ciencia-ficción... Sentimos cercanía con los autores anglosajones, integramos referentes mediáticos en nuestras novelas como el cine, la televisión y el cómic y tenemos una vocación narrativa que busca la amenidad y la diversión".

Francisco G. Haghenbeck (Ciudad de México, 1965), autor de El diablo me obligó (Suma de Letras) o El caso tequila (RocaEditorial), subraya su reivindicación de la novela. "Miras las novedades y todo son ensayos políticos o libros de autoayuda. La ficción es un animal en peligro de extinción". Alberto Chimal, con Los esclavos (Almadía), e Iris García Cuevas, con 36 toneladas (Ediciones B), son otros miembros del grupo. "Queremos que la novela sea divertida, original y que enseñe algo", añade Haghenbeck. "Nosotros hacemos realismo mágico sucio".

Si bien han roto con las vacas sagradas de la literatura mexicana y se rebelan contra el poder de las élites intelectuales, cuentan con dos hermanos mayores -Élmer Mendoza y Paco Ignacio Taibo II- y reivindican la ironía del malogrado Jorge Ibargüengoitia.

Escriben novela negra con vocación social e inevitablemente no puede faltar el trasfondo de la violencia que azota México en los últimos años. Pero es una novela cargada de humor porque, como dice Haghenbeck, "es la forma de hacer frente a una realidad tan dura como la que tenemos, algo que pareció congelárseles a los novelistas suecos que están tan de moda".

Bef señala una doble aproximación hacia la violencia del crimen organizado. "Por una parte hay que evitar el oportunismo y por otra, en la medida que eres capaz de nombrar aquello que temes, puede servir para ayudar a entendernos dentro de unos años". El autor de Hielo negro, que al igual que Haghenbeck tiene por primera vocación el cómic y presenta estos días en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara la novela gráfica La calavera de cristal, considera que México está en un callejón sin salida. "La guerra frontal contra el narcotráfico ha sumergido al país en un mar de sangre. Creo en la despenalización de las drogas, pero es demasiado buen negocio para que se quiera arreglar".

Tampoco es muy optimista en el plano político ante las próximas elecciones presidenciales en las que parte como favorito el Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), que gobernó México durante 70 años. "Vamos a convertirnos en el único país que salimos pacíficamente de una dictadura para volver a ella 12 años después".

Entretanto, los niños hiperactivos de la nueva novela mexicana reivindican la ficción en esa ciudad infinita que es el DF, y que por una vez en la literatura escrita en español los molinos puedan ser verdaderos gigantes.

After these two months sales are now up to 30.000 copies in trade (and increasing week after week).

Espasa adquiere los derechos de 'B de Bella', de Alberto Ferreras

La editorial Espasa ha adquirido los derechos en castellano para España y América Latina de la novela 'B de Bella' ('B as in Beauty'), de Alberto Ferreras, para su publicación en 2012. La novela fue publicada originalmente en inglés en 2009 por Grand Central Publishing (USA) y este mes de Octubre también se ha publicado en castellano (traducción del propio autor) en Estados Unidos, en la editorial Vintage Español.

Los derechos también han sido vendidos ya a Dalai Editore (Italia).

Pero no me cabe duda de que esta teoría es totalmente falsa porque como poquísimo, hago ejercicio todos los días y jamás toco los carbohidratos, especialmente después de las siete de la noche.

Hay quien dice que es un problema hereditario; que soy gorda como mi tía Chavela porque es parte de nuestra herencia genética. El único problema es que Chavela es mi tía porque se casó con el hermano de mi madre, o sea que ella y yo no tenemos ni un solo gen en común. He ahí otra teoría que no vale para nada.

Luego está la teoría de mi segundo psicoterapeuta, el que me dijo que yo usaba mi peso para “evitar la intimidad”, o sea que de manera subconsciente había engordado para evitar que me tocaran. Esta es otra necedad, porque no tengo ningún problema con el contacto físico, es más, me encanta que me toquen. Pero mi teoría favorita del por qué de mi gordura es la más complicada y romántica de todas. La llamo la “Teoría de la Niñera”, e involucra a una madre desolada, una manada de tiburones, una base militar y sexo extramarital.” (...)

Laura Fernández (Terrassa, 1981) trabaja como periodista freelance. Hasta la fecha ha publicado las novelas ‘Dos y dos son cinco’ (Ediciones Barataria, 2006), ésta con el seudónimo de Laura Malasaña, ‘Bienvenidos a Welcome’ (Elipsis Ediciones 2008) y ‘Wendolin Kramer’ (Seix Barral 2011). También ha participado en diversas antologías de relatos.

Hoy nos alegra anunciar la adquisición, por parte de Caballo de Troya, de los derechos en lengua castellana de 'Un montón de gatos', el nuevo libro de relatos de la escritora vasca Eider Rodríguez. Escrita originalmente en euskera (Katu Jendea), esta obra recoge varios relatos en los que Eider Rodríguez confirma su especial talento para el cuento, del que ya pudimos disfrutar en ‘Carne’, su anterior libro publicado en castellano (451 Editores, 2008).

En febrero de 2004 Caballo de Troya anunció la salida de sus primeras novedades y mostró sus señas de identidad: un sello con perfil de editorial independiente integrado en un grupo editorial, Random House Mondadori. Desde entonces, Caballo de Troya ha puesto más de 50 títulos en el mercado dando a conocer, entre otros, a autores como Julián Rodríguez, Mercedes Cebrián, Lolita Bosch, Javier Pascual o Elvira Navarro.

La publicación de ‘Un montón de gatos’ está prevista para el primer trimestre de 2012. Eider Rodríguez (Rentería, 1979) es periodista, editora, traductora y guionista. A little handwritten notebook that Frida Khalo called ‘The Book of the Holy Herb’ was to be exhibited at the Palace of Fine Arts on occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth. The notebook disappeared on the same day that the exhibition was opened...

After a severe accident in the crash of a bus and a trolley car, and after she died for the first time, Frida Khalo reaches an agreement with her Benefactress (the Death herself): Frida will be allowed to live, but, in exchange, every year she will have to prepare an offering to the Dead as a rememberance of this agreement.

Since then, Frida writes down every receipe that she prepares for the ‘Día de Muertos’ (The Day of the Dead). This is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

The receipes are gathered toghether by Frida in her beloved notebook. While year after year the ritual is repeated, Frida’s life goes on impetuously, full of rapture and pain. She meets Diego Rivera, the man whom she will marry and share her life with; but who is also the man who will mark the beginning of her second death. She lives the Mexican Revolution and the socialist upraise, a life behind the fame of her husband.

Frida loves and desires madly, but she lives on borrowed time; her aching and ruined body constantly reminds her that her Benefactress is taking away bits of her soul day after day, and that their final encounter is becoming closer.

Hierba Santa was published under the pen name of Alexandra Scheiman, but all international publishers will publish it using the author’s real name.

Editora Teodolito (Portugal) acquires rights of 'Csirkejáték', by Rubin Szilárd

Editora Teodolito has acquired Portuguese rights of this Hungarian novel, originally published in 1963. Translation rights of this novel have also been acquired by publishers such as Rowoholt (Germany), Backlist/Planeta Group (Spanish), Gaalade (France), Rizzoli (Italy) and Van Gennep (Netherlands);

The novel was rediscovered in 2004 by the Hungarian publishing house Magveto. In the Spring of 2009 the German translation was released by Rowohlt, and gained a lot of attention in Germany. Newspapers such as Frankfurter Allgemeine, Frankfurter Rundschau, and Spiegel among others issued rave reviews, calling the the book "one of last century's most exciting love stories", and placing it on a par with Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY. The author was born in 1927 and died in Summer 2010 in Budapest.

This is the story of Attila and Orsolya, two young lovers in post-World War II Hungary. (The title refers to a game which first-person narrator Attila describes: players are asked to hold out sitting on rails as long as possible despite a train rushing near. His friend remarks that their lives are no different from the game.)

Attila is a poor, aspiring writer, and Orsolya is the descendant of a rich bourgeois German family. Attila felt drawn to Orsolya since they were children, but he dares speak to her for the first time only after she returns after the war from burned down Dresden to her former home town near Budapest, still marked by her recovery from Typhus. Because her family is German, their former riches are all gone. In contrast, Attila seems to emerge as a winner under the new socialist rule – so the two form an unlikely coalition turned upside down. But the obstacles Attila and Orsolya face are strikingly similar to the old days: Orsolya’s family objects to the relationship, and they quite openly point out to Attila that they don’t consider him a good match for Orsolya.

The novel will be published in Portugal next year.

De la Calle tells us about Tina Modotti's life, a continuing adventure. In ‘La voz de los muertos’ Barcelona’s Police inspector David Ossa faces a difficult case: a multiple murder and a suicide that have occured in Las Ramblas, right in the heart of Barcelona. His investigations lead him to a case from 1969, still unsolved and almost identical to the one he is trying to solve now. La otra isla takes the structure of a detective novel and adapts it to the chaotic, unpredictable and generally unsatisfactory way in which things – anything – tend to happen in Venezuela. A German couple visit the island on holiday, fall in love with the place and make arrangements to move permanently. One day, Manfred, the husband, discovers an old warehouse where cocks are raised and trained for fighting. He becomes obsessed with it, loses interest in his business, his wife and, ultimately, even himself. Depressed, Manfred drowns in a dangerous beach, where he and Renate, his wife, have a beach bar.

The authorities see nothing out of order but Manfred’s mother in Germany receives an anonymous note claiming there has been foul play. She travels to Margarita and engages a local lawyer to find out what truly happened to her son.

An informal investigation begins, but it soon runs out of steam and ends the only way anything of the kind could end in Venezuela: in nothing.

By immersing the reader in the peculiar underworld of cock fighting with great detail and patience and exploiting the opportunity afforded to him by the presence of foreign characters in what remains a Venezuelan story, Suniaga convincingly creates a scenario where he can build the profile of the island and its people by contrasting its culture with Germany’s.

We are happy to share the good news that arrive from Germany about the novel 'Hierba Santa', by F.G. Haghenbeck. 'Hierba Santa' was published in Germany by Insel Verlag last January 2011 and up to now the novel has been reprinted four times. We are glad that German readers are enjoying it!

Foreing rights have already been sold to: Simon & Schuster/Atria (World English), Suhrkamp/Insel (Germany), Orlando Publishers/Bruna (The Netherlands), Planeta Brasil (Brazil), Shangai 99 (China), Rizzoli (Italy).

A little handwritten notebook that Frida Khalo called The Book of the Holy Herb was to be exhibited at the Palace of Fine Arts on occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth. The notebook disappeared on the same day that the exhibition was opened...

Since then, Frida writes down every receipe that she prepares for the Día de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). This is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

The receipes are gathered toghether by Frida in her beloved notebook. While year after year the ritual is repeated, Fridas life goes on impetuously, full of rapture and pain. She meets Diego Rivera, the man whom she will marry and share her life with; but who is also the man who will mark the beginning of her second death. She lives the Mexican Revolution and the socialist upraise, a life behind the fame of her husband.

We're happy to announce that Éditions Denöel will publish its French translation of the Mexican novel 'Trago Amargo' (Bitter Drink) at the end of this month. They changed the title into 'Martini Shoot', and the novel has been brilliantly translated by Juliette Ponce.

Trago amargo is a very original and peculiar noir novel: A story of intrigue, an accurate historical depiction of Hollywood in the 60s, a very unique ambience and a funny compendium of the best and most famous cocktails of the world. It also has tastes of road movie, adventure and detective stories.

Sunny Pascal, beatnik patenté aficionado de la tequila et des planches de surf, gagne sa vie en faisant le ménage des grands d’Hollywood. Sa spécialité: laver acteurs et producteurs des scandales les plus incroyables et leur éviter tout contact indésirable avec la police.

En cette année 1963, un nouveau contrat l’emmène à Puerto Vallarta, dans son Mexique natal, sur le tournage du nouveau film de John Huston. Entre deux cocktails bien corsés, il veille à ce que le casting de marque ne s’entre-tue pas avant le clap de fin. Tâche délicate lorsque l’on sait que la plupart des actrices présentes – Liz Taylor, Ava Gardner, deborah Kerr, sue lyon – ont un ex-amant en commun, et que, pour pimenter le tout, John huston a offert à chacun de ses acteurs un pistolet muni de balles en argent.

Sunny Pascal aurait bien aimé se noircir en paix aux côtés de Richard Burton, mais il doit gérer un vol de bijou, un accident de plateau mortel, une overdose et un garde du corps trop gourmand, tout cela sans éclabousser la production.

Le premier volet de ce qui devrait devenir une série autour du privé Pascal est savoureux à souhait: son personnage, premier limier beatnik du genre, est charismatique en diable et bourré d’humour noir. la galerie de personnages secondaires est tout aussi enlevée, qu’il s’agisse du mystérieux billy Joe rouge, toujours prompt à apparaître au beau milieu des fusillades, ou de « l’avocat du diable », bernabé Jurado, friand de règlements de comptes sanglants autour d’un plat d’empanadas.

La narration se construit autour des recettes de cocktails qui ouvrent chaque chapitre: le style est pétillant, drôle, évoquant à merveille, au-delà d’une intrigue bien ficelée, l’atmosphère de ce tournage improbable et la légèreté des sweet sixties.

F.G. Haghenbeck est né en 1965 à Mexico D.F. Il réside à Puerto Vallarta où il partage son temps entre l’écriture de romans et celle de scénarios pour la bande dessinée, son autre passion. Trago Amargo, primé au Mexique et publié avec succès en Espagne, est son premier roman traduit en français.

En Mayo llegará a las librerías la novela húngara ''Breve historia de un amor eterno'', de Szilárd Rubin, publicada en castellano por Editorial Backlist.

Roca Editorial is launching a divulgative books series which will include ''Perché ci piace la musica'' (Why We Like Music), by Silvia Bencivelli. The book was originally published in Italy by Alpha Test/Sironi Editore and rights were previously sold in France.

Is it really possible that listening to Mozart will make us and our children smarter? Why is there always some classical music in background, in high class restaurants? Is it true that cows like opera and sharks like Barry White?Darwin thought our ancestors used music to court, and this would have lead to words later. Stain, Stinky, Smudge and Scruffy are best friends. They are also the dirtiest pieces of clothes in the house. They love sleeping, eating and finding new ways of getting even dirtier.

On this late morning, breakfast was a pack of cookies way past the due date. The cookies pled for mercy but they were wolfed down in a sec. And it was only when the last crumb was licked from the floor that they noticed that Stain was missing.

Odd, they thought. Stain was always the last out of bed. They looked around the house but nothing. And he wasn’t on his favourite hiding spot under the hall carpet. Something really bad must have happened, like being caught by the lady of the house. Which would definitely lead to a full wash.

Horror!, horror!, they all thought. And with no further delays they ventured into the kitchen to try to find and save his friend. The Kitchen was the most dangerous area of the house, where the lady of the house was always cleaning or preparing to clean something. They could all end up washed and clean.

But there is no time for arguing. So, they pull their dirt together and set off to save Stain...

The Dirty Little Monsters is a friendship story aimed at children 4 to 8 years old, about the forgotten inhabitants of a house. Told in a compelling, funny way, and spiced with sparkly dialogues, it has around 20 original illustrations. Publishing House Anubis, in Greece, has acquired rights of 'Alicia en un mundo real', the graphic novel by Isabel Franc and Susanna Martín (published in Spanish and Catalan by Norma Editorial).

This is a graphic novel in which Alice doesn’t live in Wonderland. She has gone through an exprience that, unfortunately, is real to many women: a breast cancer.

Nevertheless, thanks to her strong and fighting character she has been able to turn an especially dramatic situation into a life experience that helps her to carry on. Her sense of humor has not been taken away by the journey of the disease, the aggressive treatments or the extirpation of a breast.

This is a book about breast cancer written in a non tragic way. It narrates the vicissitudes of a journalist in her late 40s who sees how, all of a sudden, her life will be throughly changed by an unexpected event. The comic puts special emphasis in how Alicia confronts life after such an adverse adventure.

Alicia is a freelance professional, with a successful and hectic life both in the filelds of love and work, she’s always running up and down until one day everything stops during a visit to her gynecologist: the doctor detexts a breast cancer. She will have to undergo surgery and follow a tratment. The doctors say it plain: “you’ll lose a year”.

Alicia en un mundo real portrays, in an autobiographical tone and with traces of irony, the ups and downs that Alicia will live during her fight against cancer and her return to everyday life.

A few weeks ago 'Alicia en un mundo real' was awarded the Jennifer Quiles Award. After its success in Spain it has already been reprinted by Norma Editorial.

Matías Candeira (Madrid, 1984) es escritor y guionista, licenciado en Comunicación Audiovisual por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y Diplomado en Guion cinematográfico por la ECAM. Imparte talleres de escritura creativa y relato breve en Escuela de Escritores y colabora en medios como "La tormenta en un vaso" o "Culturamas".

Durante los últimos años, su trayectoria ha sido avalada por numerosos premios literarios de prestigio, entre otros muchos: el Premio de Cuentos Ignacio Aldecoa, Certamen de Jóvenes Creadores del Ayuntamiento de Madrid o el Premio Internacional de Narrativa Tomás Fermín de Arteta.

The University of Nevada Press (USA) has already published the translation into English of Harkaitz Cano's 'Blade of Light' (El filo de la Hierba) in its Basque Literature series.

Blade of Light is a uchronia—an alternate history—in its main plot line, Hitle
r has won the Second World War and now dominates Europe. He then decides to conquer fi
rst Manhattan and then the whole American continent. His journey takes him to New York on a ship aboard which Charles Chaplin is also traveling. Chaplin has been imprisoned and tortured on account of his film The Great Dictator, which remains a pesky thorn in Hitler’s side.

On a second level another story is told—that of a stowaway who traveled to New York in 1886 hidden inside the crown of the Statue of Liberty. The fate of this stowaway, Olivier Legrand, crosses Chaplin’s, who manages to escape from his torturers and finds refuge with the now old man.

The originality of the story has its narrative counterpoint in Cano’s attractive prose style, full of images and lyricism. A master of “what if ?” and suspense, the novel is also an important reflection on life and the process of writing and artistic creation.

Harkaitz Cano (Donostia, 1975) writes fiction and poetry. Among his books are Neguko zirkua (2005), a collection of short stories, and Piano gainean gosaltzen (2000), a chronicle born of the time he spent in New York before the 9/11.

Also connected to his stay in this city is the poetry collection Norbait dabil sute-eskaileran (2001). He is a seasoned scriptwriter for audiovisual media and comics, and his novels have been translated into Russian, Greek and German.

Shortly after we announced the deal for Spanish rights with publishing house Acantilado, Quaderns Crema (its sister imprint publishing in Catalan) has also acquired translation rights of ‘Spring Collection’, the new novel by György Spiró, one of the most acclaimed and successful contemporary Hungarian writers.

The deal was made on behalf of Magveto Publishing House (Hungary).

There are more journalists than iguanas on the village, all expecting to take the best pic of the couple.

Each of the stars receives a present from the Director: a golden gun with silver bullets. But the joke turns to something serious when one of those guns is used to shot and kill someone. Sunny Pascal, a half american and half mexican beatnick detective, is in charge of solving the crime, which soon gets complicated by further murders, blackmailing, stolen jewels and a plot that involves the Mexican mafia.

The novel keeps advancing and unveiling its mysteries chapter by chapter, amongst cocktail recipes, explanations about their origins and suggestions about the music that best fits every drink.

Acantilado acquires Spanish rights of György Spiró's 'Tavaszi Tárlat' (Spring Collection)

Spanish publishing house Acantilado has been the first international publisher to acquire translation rights of the new novel by one of the most acclaimed and successful contemporary Hungarian writers, György Spiró.

The deal was made on behalf of Magveto Publishing House (Hungary).

“It’s not a bad idea for a man to get admitted to hospital a couple of days before a revolution breaks out, stay in until it’s been quashed and recuperate quietly at home during the ensuing purge.” These are the opening lines of György Spiró’s latest novel, Spring Collection, that presents the reader with a shocking picture of the 56 Hungarian Revolution.

The main protagonist is an engineer by the name of Gyula Fátray who, like so many other qualified professionals at that time, is trying to get along first as a simple worker before the Second World War, and after it as a communist party member, an idealist, and leader of planning in a newly founded factory. Just days before mass protests begin in October, he is admitted to hospital for for surgery. He returns home after the fighting to be faced by a Soviet-occupied Budapest.

This novel commemorates the unbearably absurd machinations of the dictatorial regime in which not even those innocent could feel safe. When Gyula’s name appears in a newspaper article alongside some conspirators against the state, he finds himself ostracised by his best friends and closest colleagues virtually overnight. It no longer seems to matter that he was in hospital for the duration of the revolution and that the charges are false. Just as in Kafka’s Trial, history marches mercilessly towards an excruciating outcome.

Gyula’s situation is made all the more difficult by the fact that his wife, Kati, a tough communist, seems not to understand a thing because she is so wrapped up in herself and her role in organising an art installation known as the Spring Collection. The novel recalls the purges that came after 56 with touching authenticity.

György Spiró was born in 1946 in Budapest. He is a writer, a dramatist, a translator and scholar of Polish literature. He is one of the most frequently played contemporary playwrights of Hungary.

6.- En cuanto a La travesía, ¿por qué decides mostrar más al hombre Darwin y no al biólogo Darwin?

Es un tema reivindicativo. En el acervo cultural de esta nuestra sociedad, el científico, el intelectual de la ciencia, es representado como un chiflado huraño, sociópata y peligroso la más veces, mientras que los personajes divertidos, agradables y amistosos se reservan para la gente de las humanidades o bien, incluso, para los representantes de las seudociencias. Me parecía un buen cambio ofrecer al público una visión de Darwin distinta: la de un joven alocado, un tanto torpe, charlatán y simpático, quien se coló de rondón en un viaje larguísimo y tuvo la oportunidad de aprender todo lo que Inglaterra no podía enseñarle.

We start the week with good news for the novel 'Las razones de Jo' (Jo's Reasons), by Isabel Franc. Originally published by Editorial Lumen in 2006, this is a very personal look into Loise May Alcott's classic novel 'Little Women', and to its main character Jo March.

'Little Women' has been a point of reference for several generations of readers, and Jo March the rebellious main character with which most of us have identified as readers. A brave warrior, this young woman rejected society’s gender roles and channeled her desires for independence into her writing. But the enthusiasm that drew us to her turned to disappointment when, at the end of the book, Jo decides to get married and give up writing. There have been numerous interpretations of this ending, but the question remains: "Why did she do it?"

Las razones de Jo poses a response in Jo’s own voice and with her same rebellious nature. The author that has brought her back to life on the page, Isabel Franc, gets into the character’s skin in order to reinvent her and give her the last word from her own pen. Jo provides her own perspective on what happened: Papa was no hero; he went to the front because he was fed up with so many women.

There is also a battle fought over love. Jo falls in love with a woman in New York, turning her long-imagined fantasies into reality. With her, she experiences a relationship on equal terms, knowing pleasure and sharing intellectual ideas and interests. She denounces the theory of the period that considered homosexuality a disease and demands the right to live her love freely.

Finally, our little woman returns to her hometown and marries a dull man. But she doesn’t stop writing, and in a drawer in the room of her own that she’s always kept she stores her unpublished works. Among them is this literary legacy in which she explains her reasons...

Isabel Franc made her literary debut with the novel Entre todas las mujeres (Tusquets 1992), an unusual book that was named as a finalist in the Premio La Sonrisa Vertical. She has participated in several poetry collectives (Abecedaria 1995, 1996 and 1997) and has published short stories in the magazines Zero and Nosotras. Amongst other novels, she is the author of the celebrated Trilogía de Lola Van Guardia, edited by Egales, which includes the titles: Con Pedigree (1997); Plumas de Doble Filo (1999); and La mansión de las Tríbadas (2002), all three translated into French and published by Odin.

She recently published a graphic novel in collaboration with Susanna Martín: Alicia en un mundo real (Alice in a Real World, Norma Editorial, 2010).

'Modotti', by Ángel de la Calle, will be translated into French

Vertige Graphic (France) has acquired translation rights of Ángel de la Calle's graphic novel 'Modotti. A Woman of the 20th Century'.

Tina Modotti (in the picture by Edward Weston, in 1923) was a woman of the 20th Century: photographer, actress, muse to writers and artists, politically engaged, free, poliphacetic, and witness to many important events and artistical landmarks.

Editorial SinSentido published in Spanish a graphic biography of this extraordinary character created (text & illustrations) by Ángel de la Calle: 'Modotti: Una mujer del siglo XX'

De la Calle tells us about Modotti's life, a continuing adventure: A beautiful Hollywood star at an early age, she moved to the post-revolutionary Mexico with her friend and lover Edward Weston (now an acclaimed photographer) where she became actively engaged with the communist party, took thousands of photographs and also became the lover of almost as many men... she also was friends with artists of her time such as Mayakovsky, Bernard Tavern, Antonio Machado, Neruda, Diego Rivera, John Dos Passos, Frida Khalo...

She lived her time, from the glamourous 'Belle Epoque' to the Europe of the Totalitarism in the 1930s (travelling to Paris, Berlin, Moscow…) and lived in Spain during the Civil War. She then flew back to Mexico escaping from Franco. She died there in 1942, alone and in a taxi.

In 'Modotti' Ángel de la Calle becomes himself a character who incidentally finds a picture of Tina Modotti and starts investigating about her life. Thus, the book becomes not only a biography of the photographer but also a hooking voyage of discovery, admiration and devotion towards her personality and her work.

Tina Modotti's life, now revisited by Ángel de la Calle in this magnificent graphic novel, stands alone as an example, and a lesson, of personal freedom and engagement.

‘Modotti’ has received countless awards in Spain, amongst them to the ‘Best Work and Best Script at the Barcelona Comic Salon in 2004’; ‘Best script in 2006’ and the prestigious Premio de la Crítica a Mejor obra española (2006).

Nadie a bordo del bergantín de Su Majestad Beagle sabía que la suya iba a ser

una travesía que cambaría el curso de la Historia.

Charles Darwin no realizó solo el viaje que cambiaría las ciencias naturales para siempre. El HMS Beagle tenía otra misión, y cada uno de los hombres que lo tripulaban una historia que contar. ‘La travesía’ tiene como hilo narrativo, amén de la anterior relación epistolar, la extraña amistad que surge entre Darwin y FitzRoy, las relaciones entre los miembros de la tripulación y el destino de un anillo que la reina Adelaida le regaló a una india fueguina. También los descubrimientos de Darwin, pero explicados más allá de las páginas de su diario.

David López, ganador del XXII Premio Jaén de Novela, nos embarca en un viaje en el tiempo alrededor del mundo. 'Hierba Santa', by F.G. Haghenbeck, has just been acquired by Shangai 99 (China). Translation rights were recently acquired by Suhrkamp/Insel (Germany), Planeta Brasil (Brazil) and Orlando Publishers (The Netherlands) as well.

Hierba Santa was published last summer 2009 by Planeta Mexico. With echoes of Magic Realism, the novel is a vivid homage to Frida Kahlo, a woman who changed the course of modern art.

In the novel we are told that all her life Frida kept a little notebook which she called 'The Book of Hierba Santa (Holy Herb)'. In it, she wrote down not only her thoughts and ideas but also many Mexican food receipes that she prepared every 'Día de Muertos' (Day of the Dead), a holiday celebrated in Mexico to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include preparing the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

What's new and different compared to other books about Frida is that the author uses fantasy in the story: The narrator tells us that after Frida's fatal accident in a tram in her early youth (which actually happened) she dies and meets Death. Frida then reaches an agreement with Death which allows her to go back to life: Every 'Día de muertos' she has to pay a tribute to Death by cooking wonderful meals. Given this, all through the novel Frida is very conscious that Death is also part of life. This certainty gives her a special view of the world and the events that take place.

Some of Frida's favourite receipes are included in the novel towards the end of every chapter, so apart from enjoying the narrative and learning more abot Frida's life, readers can also try their culinary skills and pay their own homage to a woman that has become an icon of 20th century art and feminism.

Writer and scriptwriter has worked for Televisa and for different museums. He is proud to be the only Mexican who has written scripts for Superman (DC Comics), and has also participated in the creation of Crimson (Wildstorm 1999-2001) and Alternation (Image Comics, 2004). Spanish rights of CSIRKEJÁTÉK, by Hungarian author Szilárd Rubin, sold to Backlist

Editorial Bcklist has acquired Spanish rights of this Hungarian novel, orginally published in 1963.

Backlist will publish it in Spanish in 2011, as Hunagry will be the Invited Guest at the Feria del Libro de Madrid.

The novel was rediscovered in 2004 by the Hungarian publishing house Magveto. In the Spring of 2009 the German translation was released by Rowohlt, and gained a lot of attention in Geermany. Newspapers such as Frankfurter Allgemeine, Frankfurter Rundschau, and Spiegel among others issued rave reviews, calling the the book "one of last century's most exciting love stories", and placing it on a par with Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY. The author was born in 1927 and recently died in Budapest.

Rights, so far, have been sold to Rowoholt (Germany), Backlist (Spain) and Slovart (Slovakia).

Clandestinidad, la nueva novela de Gustavo Dessal, será publicada en castellano por Interzona a finales de 2010.

A finales de los años 60 en Buenos Aires, dos jóvenes adolescentes inician una relación de novios. Él es introvertido, callado, carente de identidad y de deseos. Ella es su antítesis: vital, idealista, desbordada por la pasión. Al principio, ella intenta corregirlo a él, educarlo, convertirlo en otro. Con el tiempo descubre que esa tarea es imposible y sus vidas se separan.

Gustavo Dessal (Buenos Aires, 1952) reside en Madrid desde 1982. Es psicoanalista y escritor. Formado en Buenos Aires y París, ejerce su práctica clínica desde hace más de treinta años. Ha publicado dos libros de relatos, Operación Afrodita (2004) y Más líbranos del bien (2006), ambos en la editorial Huerga y Fierro. En 2009 publicó su primera novela, Principio de incertidumbre (RBA, 2009). Además, es el compilador del volumen Las ciencias inhumanas (Gredos, 2009).

Planeta Brasil acquires rights of Hierba Santa, a novel about Frida Kahlo

'Hierba Santa', by FG Haghenbeck, has just been acquired by Planeta Brasil. Translation rights were recently acquired by Suhrkamp/Insel (Germany) and Orlando Publishers (The Netherlands) as well.

Hierba Santa was published last summer 2009 by Planeta Mexico. With echoes of Magic Realism, the novel is a vivid homage to Frida Kahlo, a woman who changed the course of modern art.

Germán Sierra was born in La Coruña in 1960. At present, he lives in Santiago de Compostela, where he combines his work as a university professor in Biochemistry and researcher in medical neuroscience with his literary career.
